The RIT School of Physics and Astronomy offers MS and Ph.D. degrees in Physics and Astrophysical Sciences. Research areas include Astrophysics, AMO Physics, Biophysics, Condensed Matter and Applied Physics, and Physics Education Research.
RIT's physics Ph.D. program offers in-depth research into a variety of research areas, allowing students to pursue their passion and delve into cutting-edge scientific investigations. As a physics doctoral student, you will have the opportunity to work alongside world-class faculty members at the forefront of their respective fields. Our distinguished professors are dedicated to mentorship, ensuring each student receives personalized guidance and support throughout their academic journey.
The physics Ph.D. program offers a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum designed to provide you with a deep understanding of fundamental physics principles, advanced research skills, and specialized knowledge in your chosen areas of focus. The program combines core courses, electives, research work, and professional development activities.
We have also just started a new NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program in cooperation with the Electrical and Microelectronics Engineering Department. Our CMOS+X NRT program at RIT aims to develop an innovative convergent graduate research training model for next-generation complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) + X (X = AI, biomedical, chemical, optoelectronic, photonic, nanoelectronic, quantum, and packaging) talents, in order to address the domestic semiconductor talent shortage which is an urgent national priority. If you are intersted in this area of applied/engineering physics research, please visit the CMOS+X website or clink the additional information link below.
An RIT graduate degree is an investment with lifelong returns. Ph.D. students typically receive full tuition and an RIT Graduate Assistantship that will consist of a research assistantship (stipend) or a teaching assistantship (salary). The School is committed to a diverse applications pool and alleviating any financial burden of application. For information, please contact the Program Director.
