About

We are a department where award-winning research and exceptional teaching combine to advance the frontiers of physics.

Student life as a physics graduate student at NC State, while academically demanding, offers a rich array of choices and social and recreational activities within the Research Triangle area, or within 2-4 hours of driving at the NC beaches and in the NC mountains. Offerings range from outdoor activities, to a lively bar/restaurant scene in Raleigh, theater, symphony, and ballet. Duke and UNC Chapel Hill are nearby.

Description of your department culture

The department sponsors three coffee/tea get-togethers a week. One of them is the student suite/lounge area. We have some of the happiest and most satisfied students (as reported to us by the applicants who join our program). Students are very satisfied with our program in exit interviews/surveys.

A weekly colloquium brings together the whole department, and several subfields host regular seminars targeted to researchers within their community.
