Description of your department culture

The Department prides itself on close faculty-student interaction with a student to faculty ratio of 1.3:1. Research groups hold weekly meetings in addition to frequent one-on-one meetings. A weekly social meeting encourages student-student and student-faculty interaction outside of the student's area of research. In addition, we hold an annual holiday part and a year-end party. A Department-sponsored graduate student research competition gives students the opportunity to win cash prizes. The Department is inviting to under-represented groups with 31% of past Ph.D. recipients being female and 23% being Hispanic.
