Program Requirements

Master's:
The Master's of Science (M.S.) degree is given for completion of 1 or more years of study beyond the Bachelor's degree. A minimum of 30 points (or semester hours) of residence credit of approved graduate course work completed at Columbia is required for the degree. A research report is required for the program in Materials Science and Engineering. A minimum grade point average of 2.5 must be maintained. The following are not required for the M.S. degree: knowledge of a foreign language, a comprehensive and/or qualifying examination, and a thesis. All degree requirements must be completed within 5 years of the beginning of graduate study. The Program in Medical Physics, which leads to a 36-point M.S. degree and requires a comprehensive examination is offered in collaboration with faculty from the Mailman School of Public Health. It prepares students for careers in medical physics and provides preparation for the ABR certification examination.

Doctorate:
For both the PhD and Eng. Sci.D., candidates must successfully complete 30 points (or semester hours) or more of approved graduate course work beyond the Master's degree. A grade point average of 3.0 must be maintained. Candidates must successfully pass both written and oral qualifying examinations. hey must submit and successfully defend an approved dissertation. A knowledge of a foreign language is not required. A time limit of seven years is allowed for completion of the requirements for doctoral degrees. The residence requirement for the PhD degree is satisfied by six Residence Units in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, two of which are granted for the Master's degree. The residence requirement for the Eng. Sc. D. degree is satisfied by 12 additional points of credit in APAM E9800 (Doctoral Research Instruction) in the School of Engineering and Applied Science.

Other degrees:
The Master of Philosophy (M. Phil): All requirements for the PhD, except for the dissertation.

Thesis:
Thesis may be written in absentia.
