Physicists study the basic principles and laws that govern the natural world. We engage in scientific and technological challenges, perform cutting-edge research, and discover new properties and conditions of space, time, energy, force and matter!
The graduate program in Physics currently has approximately 85 students, 40 standing faculty, 12 emeritus faculty, and more than 20 postdoctoral fellows and research scientists, plus visiting scholars and full-time scientific support staff.
The Physics Department is an internationally recognized research institution and ranks well in the National Research Council surveys of research-doctorate programs in the United States.
Our research activities cover the range from constituents of matter at the subatomic and molecular levels to solar/stellar astrophysics and the evolution of active galaxies. Our CHARA Array is the largest optical/IR interferometer in the world.
We are leaders in several subfields of physics & astronomy. Our research foci include the origin and structure of the universe, the microscopic and macroscopic description of condensed matter and biological systems, and the physics of the environment
The College of Science physics program equips you with what we know about our universe — theories on matter, the forces, space, and time — so you can reach into the unknown and answer the question… why?
UH physics faculty members serve on national peer-review panels to evaluate competitive research grants and edit prestigious scientific journals. Students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty interact to create a research-intensive atmosphere.
